This isn't mine but i think we could all stand to read it once in a while.

How the Me-Generation Ruined Modern Conversation
May 2nd, 2007.

When I wrote my article on depression, a lot of people went into pointlessly long lectures about the difference between clinical depression and sadness. They needn’t have done this; I know the difference between clinical depression and sadness. I wasn’t trying to claim they were the same thing. I was merely arguing that most people are quick to assume depression when some honest self examination might just reveal plain, old sadness. They say to themselves, “I have a good job, plenty of money, a nice home, the latest gadgets, and good looking kids. What reason do I have to be depressed?”

Upon communicating these facts with their Doctors, while also admitting to vague thoughts of suicide, the end result is a man in a white coat who replies, “Good point. Here’s your pills.”

No one ever considers that happiness doesn’t always come in the form of a boat or a tropical vacation. TV tells us that a new car with a heated cup holder will make us happy….or a cell phone that plays MP3’s….or a cute new sun dress. So we buy and buy and buy and when that doesn’t work, TV is quick to remind us that people in other countries are starving, so we should grateful for what we’ve got.

Do you want to know the reason I think people are so sad?

Loneliness. Simple loneliness. I think most people are so motherfucking lonely, they can’t see straight. Again, I will use post secret as an example. Don’t you think it’s just a little sad and pathetic that so many people have to write down their secrets on a postcard and send them in anonymously because there is not a single person in their lives they feel comfortable confiding in? Technorati boasts that there are 71 million blogs right now. Most of which contain people who reveal their innermost thoughts and feelings to complete strangers likely because no one in real life pays attention to them. No one sees anything wrong with this?

In this day an age, it’s hard to admit you’re lonely. After all, we’re surrounded by an endlessly vast amount of people on a daily basis. We have co-workers, extended families, and shopping buddies. Sometimes we have children, foolishly hoping that a small baby will fulfill our need for companionship. When none of that works, we buy a dog. If, at the end of the day, nothing fills the void, we say to ourselves, “I have it all, so why I am a still unhappy? I have no right to be unhappy. I must be clinically depressed.”

The issue isn’t the amount of people in our lives, though.

The issue is that society, as a whole, has lost the ability to meaningfully connect with other people.

In other words, the Me-Generation has ruined modern conversation to the point where we cannot form anything but the most superficial of relationships with the people we’d like to be closest too.

How did this happen? Well, I’m glad you asked!

The Self Esteem Police Produced Self Obsessed Adults

The very day we became obsessed with the self esteem of our children is the first day shit started going downhill. We told our children they were unique and special and perfect. We insisted that the world would one day find them beautiful and smart and glib. We told them their individuality was their greatest asset and refused to criticize them even when it was sorely needed.

The end result? A generation of children who are endlessly fascinated with themselves who can’t, for the life of them, understand why the rest of the world isn’t as enamored by their utterly uniquely genius minds as they are.

Teaching our children to be confident is one thing, but we took it too far. Our children are infatuated with themselves, sometimes to the point of delusion. With so much of their love and energy devoted inward, how can we expect them to feel love for another?

Self esteem brainwashing dooms people into becoming narcissistic assholes who genuinely believe the whole world revolves around them.

Too Much Conversing on the Internet Has Diminished Our Ability to Recognize Social Cues

I spent one afternoon walking around the mall with a friend of mine. She was babbling about something ridiculous and no matter how many times I tried to change the subject, she kept referring back to our original discussion. Finally, I gave up and for two solid hours, my only reply to her was, “Mmhm.”

SHE DIDN’T EVEN NOTICE.

She happily chattered on for 2 straight hours, absolutely oblivious to the fact that I had quit listening to her. I was amazed.

Frankly, I blame the Internet. Online, it’s hard to determine whether or not you’re boring the person you’re talking to. You don’t see them looking around the room, or staring off into space, or sighing distractedly. A few well placed ‘lols’ or ‘hehes’ can fool you into believing they are actually engaged in the conversation. So it’s really no surprise to me that so many people totally lack the ability to recognize when they’re boring someone when they attempt a real life dialogue.

This explains why people can actually maintain completely one sided conversations that last for 3 hours strictly about their fucking cats.

In reality, it takes two people to have a meaningful, enjoyable conversation. How can we expect to connect to people on a deeper level if we consistently fail to engage our conversational partners?

Right now, there are people reading this and thinking, “A true friend will want to talk about anything I want to talk about! They would not be bored by anything I say!”

You can thank the Self Esteem Police for that ideology.

We Quit Listening and Instead Began Waiting for Our Turn to Speak

Have you ever been talking to someone when it finally hit you that the other person wasn’t processing a single thing you were saying, but merely waiting for your lips to stop moving so they can say all the things bouncing around in their head?

Welcome to a kindergarten mentality applied to adult conversations! You go! Now I’ll go! It’s your turn! Now my turn! Look at us! We’re sharing!

A vital part of communication is to listen to and process what the other person is saying. You’re response should play off the statement of your counterpart. Otherwise you might as well be talking to yourself.

The only kindergarten doctrine that should apply to adult conversations is the Golden Rule. Namely, if you want other people to listen to you, you should be willing to listen to them. Quit talking AT people and start talking TO people.

We Ask Questions We Don’t Want the Answer To

The worst example:

“How are you doing today?”

The person who is asked this question might as well give up and say ‘fine’ right off the bat; because chances are that’s the only answer the asker is willing to hear. Don’t believe me? Try answering ‘terrible.’ Watch in amazement as the asker airily replies ‘Good to hear’ as they sashay away.

Some people believe simply asking is being polite. You can thank the Self Esteem Police for those people. I’m sorry, but putting forth the least amount of effort doesn’t win you any courtesy points in my book. Taking 5 seconds out of your day to slow down and actually show interest in the answer is polite. Asking a question merely because you want recognition for your condescending form of pseudo-caring is actually pretty rude.

In a similar vein are the people who ask you a question only because they want to you to ask them a question. For example:

Person A: “What did you do this weekend?”

Person B: “Well, I went to a movie and—

Person A: *interrupting* “Guess what I did this weekend!”

In closing, if you don’t care, don’t ask. Keep your shallow displays of insubstantial friendliness to yourself.

We Use Our Peers to Validate Our Decisions and Often Sacrifice Honesty to be Nice

I learned a long time ago that many of my friends never actually wanted my advice when they asked for it. Instead, they wanted to me to validate whatever stupid conclusion they already came to. I was merely a puppet meant to smile and nod at all the appropriate places.

When I refused and insisted on actually communicating to them what I really thought, the entire conversation shifted to them trying to convince me that they were making the correct decision!

An example:

Friend: “V, tell me the truth, do you think my boyfriend will ever leave his wife for me?”

V: “No, I don’t.”

Friend: “But I can tell he loves me by the look in his eyes! And he wrote me a poem!”

V: “That may be so, but he’s still going home to another woman at night.”

Friend: “Read this poem! Seriously, how can you read this poem and not think he loves me?”

V: “The poem is nice, but it’s a poor substitute for real love and dedication.”

Friend: “Are you saying I should stop seeing him?”

V: “Yes, that’s what I’m saying.”

Friend: “But he loves me! Don’t you understand that he loves me? I mean, just yesterday….”

It’s an exercise in futility, really. My choices are to pretend to be convinced and tell her that her relationship has a chance, or to maintain my opinion and risk wearing the Mean Tag.

My question is: what’s the point? What do we have to gain by forming relationships that revolve around validating ourselves through other people? Why maintain a friendship if you don’t respect the person’s honest opinion? When did honesty become synonymous with cruelty anyway? How can we ever learn to connect with other people when we can’t see them as individuals, but instead see them as reflections of ourselves?

Much like most problems in life, the solution to our loneliness is simple:

If you want people to care about you, you should care about them.

If you lack the ability to do that, then grab your prescription for prozac and shut the fuck up already.

But either way, quit blaming your brain. Blame yourself for becoming part of the Me-Generation.

The weekend of AWESOME

So this weekend really has been one of the best ii've had in a long time. Friday found the gang at The Jew and Ruth's house celebrating Hanukkah in style. By in style i mean there were brownies and cider present but i chose to stick with cider and share because i am dieting. It was once again great to experience the culture of somebody else in a relaxed atmosphere with people i love and cannot wait for the next Jewish festival whatever it may be.

Saturday was the combination of a role play game put together by the infamous Willard Foxton and Mexican frivolity. I won't bore you all with the details of the game itself but Willard put on a smashing game and i have well and truly caught the bug. I have a long way to go before i am actually any good at it (watching me count dots on a dice because maths scares me is rather tedious i am sure)but Dom has mentioned he may start a new game when he moves into his new place so i have my fingers well and truly crossed on that front.

After games came dinner. I chose Casa Mexicana in Bristol as, quite frankly, it is one of the best restaurants i have ever been to and i think the majority of people that night agreed! We all had a lot of fun and i felt fantastic in my outfit after i was literally pushed out the door before i changed my mind and put on a cardy. The ones that weren't tired or had children to go home to stayed on and went to a pub and eventually Ben i got home about 1.30 exhausted.

Sunday was spent crocheting, watching films and duvet sharing with Mr Dom. Lovely!

I do love it when a plan comes together. Also in weight loss news i have lost another pound! I thought it was two but turns out my scales weren't resent properly. Boo. Still i am well on the way to a slender more attractive Charlie!

Weight loss week one

I'l be honest i have struggled. I have never properly taken my weight loss seriously and the lack control i have over what i can and can't eat is making me very stressed and unhappy, that coupled with only losing a pound this week is not helping. I like planning my meals and using butter, sugar and stock but when you are trying to stick to roughly 450 cals per meal your options are seriously limited. I found myself yelling at eggs this morning and realised i need to just get over it. I only need to do this for a few months, lose the weight and hopefully learn some control when it comes to portion sizes and ingredients. If i am honest breakfast and lunch are pretty easy it is just the meal in the evening that is causing me the most strife.

But there again if losing weight was easy we would all be thin right? Eventually the cravings for sugar, chocolate and pastry will subside and i will have made some real progress and feel a lot better about myself and the way i look. My friends have been really supportive, especially Ben who takes my tantrums and moaning in his stride. Thank god i live with someone who is able to take my moods in good faith!

So in short one pound down, 27 to go...

Damn it.

Fell good hit of the summer

Jesus wept. I was going to go for a few drinks and ended up (apparently, i cannot remember relaying this information to Ben)drinking four pints of cider, a double vodka, a single vodka, one Sailor Jerry Rum and i scored Ben and i a free drink in the pub, an awful concoction of Baileys and brandy.

Feeling it so hard right now...

Trips, hips and self help tips.

So what a weekend!

Team nerd plus two new recruits (The Boy and myself) headed down to Teinmouth in Devon to visit the goddess that is Bex and to play nerdy role play games. As a complete virgin to role playing i was nervous but the guys made me feel right at home. After spending Friday drinking coffee and eating pizza with the great ginger one then spending the night drinking to excess, singing motown and stripping down to our bras in the name of fun we got down to business.

I won't bore anyone who reads this with a blow by blow account of our Dark Heresy campaign but i can tell you that i kicked some serious ass. I shot a man through a building, shot the arm off the officer of the law and killed the great ginger demon that was Fuzz. Therapeutic to say the least! I made dinner, we watched some terrible films and then Sunday was spent cleaning, easting sausages and heading home.

I seriously needed to get out of the city for a few days, cabin fever had well and truly set in and i was getting itchy feet. I now have a taste for weekends away and intend to do more of them! Sorry guys.

As well as being physically exhausting the trip was mentally trying as well. As usual boy trouble ensued and after having the best time in person and sobbing in a toilet in private i came to realisation that a) this is not attractive and b) i need to move on. It isn't healthy to borderline obsess over one person and i am sure they are finding it all a little trying too. So in order to get back to loving myself i have signed up to an online diet club and hope to lose half a stone by xmas. I am on day two and so far so good, Ben has been an angel and is offering support in anyway he can as are my other friends. As Willard said weight loss will not solve my problems but if i can look in the mirror and like what's reflected back that has got to go some way in improving my general outlook right?

In other news it is my birthday tomorrow so gifts and money are greatly appreciated (no, really) i have been invited to a "bad jumper party" at the weekend by a girl at work, the week after is more role playing (thanks for the invite guys) and a big meal to celebrate mine, Bens and the beautiful Jess's birthdays the week after (Casa Mexciana, delish!) then we are snowballing into christmas! Busy busy busy!

Oh and i am getting my nape re-pierced for my birthday, zing :D

Wah wah wah i am so sad.

The curious case of the pheasant in the flat...

The Jolly Blogger gave Ben and i a brace of dead pheasants last Saturday at a birthday party which was brilliant, i love pheasant. I had had some from him before and they were beautiful and the stew i made went down a treat. We also had a friend to stay that particular weekend who enjoyed a drink and coming home that night we were all a little drunk and very merry. As we came into the flat, dead pheasants in hand the friend demanded we hung them up. Now the usual hanging time for a brace of pheasant is around a week. More if you like the meat gamey. I don't like it gamey at all and was happy to butcher the damn things the next day but our friend was having none of it.

The next 15 minutes still remains a mystery to Ben but i recall very clearly he and the friend running into each room with a pair of dead birds on a bit of string trying to hang them up. Bathroom, Bens room, my room until the boys found our cupboard. It's not quite a airing cupboard due to the lack of a boiler but it does have the pipes connected to the central heating in there. It makes that small, enclosed space very hot and humid. I forgot to mention that our friend is a nancy boy.

All weekend he had us put the heating on as high as possible (which means Ben and i's central heating game where we were going to try and leave the heating off till January is ruined might i add) because he was chilly. The man lives Scotland for christs sake!

I digress.

Fastforward to the following Friday night, i had had a few two many beers with friends and stumbled home. As i walked into the flat i remember thinking that something smelled not right but i thought no more about it until Saturday morning. I woke up and opened the door to the most almighty stench. I assumed Ben had done a rather offensive poo that morning before work but as i walked into the bathroom the smell disappeared. I walked out, gingerly opened the cupboard door and retched. The smell hit me like thrown bowling ball. That coupled with my mighty hangover did not set me up in the best of moods.

Assuming this is what pheasant smelled like when kept indoors rather than out (we always hung ours by the back door outside) i went ahead and started to pluck and butcher the birds with a bucket to one side for the retching. I felt less and less confident as the meat seemed spoilt but i ploughed on until i boxed up and stored the meat in the freezer and put the carcass in the bin down stairs, subsequently locking myself out of the flat in my PJ shorts and PGL hoody. Not pretty.

Today is Tuesday and every time that freezer door has opened week i can smell the meat. It's hard to describe the smell but i think baby poo and hangover farts is probably best. I gave in and threw the breasts away which broke my heart, i had managed to ruin nice, free meat. Still, this is not the end of the story.

I discovered i needed toilet paper earlier on this evening, opened the cupboard and the smell was still there, i scanned the area and realised there was blood and "something else" all down the wall, on those hot metal pipes mentioned before, and in the carpet. That explains why the smell was particularity pungent.

I think we have all learnt something from this.

Don't store dead animals in an enclosed, hot space
Don't let drunk friends hang birds
Don't forget you have dead birds in your hot, enclosed space
Don't butcher animals hungover
If it smells bad, it is bad
Don't ruin perfectly good food with your idiocy.

End.

Yeah and she cooks...Basic Chicken Pie!

So you are a man. You have met a woman and you've been for a few dates. You are skint so what do you do? Invite her to yours for dinner of course...but wait, you can't cook?! No fear, in an attempt to keep everyones interest i will now be adding recipes to the blog. "Horray!" you say, "you've ensured me getting laid forever!"

So Chicken pie, Charlie Style. Scroll to the bottom for short list of ingredients.

First off you need pastry, i forgot to take pictures for pastry and pastry is a pain to learn how to do well so if i were you just buy short crust from your local supermarket unless you have time to do some practice.

Second the filling.

Obviously it's chicken pie so you need chicken, this can be picked up for less then the cost of 2 pints at Tescos. The middle class part of me hates buying cheap chicken but the hungry carnivore manages to ignore it. Apart from that go mad! You can add any sort of veg you want, i made a stew last night so i had a carrot, half a leek, one mushroom and an onion. Also instead of making my own bechamel sauce i used a can of mushroom soup. I also always use garlic. I use it in everything! I used a large clove for the pie as i could see this was going to be a large filling.

In a large sauce pan heat some oil or some butter on a med heat and chop and add your onions.

The trick is to have the onions soft not brown, make sure you stir them occasionally then add your garlic. I use a garlic crusher, chuck it on top of the onions and stir in, don't let it burn because it tastes bitter and vile.

Next your chicken, cut it into largish chunks, and then pop it in with the onions. Give it a stir. It's very important you clean up your chopping board and knife after this else you may give you and your friends/date/mother a horrific case of the runs. Hot soapy water kids, nothing puts you off sex then being sat on the toilet.

Once your chicken is sealed (that means it's mostly white all over) you add your veg. Chop up the Carrots, Mushroom and Leek (Or whatever you have decided) and chuck it in. It doesn't need to be perfect you won't see it.

Next add your can of soup, mushroom or chicken is best. You can make a gravy sauce too which consists of mixing up some thick Bisto and pouring that in instead. Turn the heat down and let it simmer. Season with some pepper and a pinch of salt (the soup has enough in it really) and some herbs. I threw in Basil but read the packets and they will tell you what's best.

Next get your pastry. The trick with pastry is to have it cold and not to handle it any more then you have to. Put some flour onto a chopping board (or onto the work surface but the chopping board is easier to clean) and put on the pastry. Take a rolling pin, put some flour on that too and roll it out. I usually have pasty on the base and on the top of the pie but i didn't make quite enough for the size of the pie dish.

You're filling should be looking and smelling delicious by now, if it isn't order that pizza.

Find a dish and pour in the filling, marvel your handiwork and turn to the pastry. I find rolling the pastry onto the rolling pin, and rolling it back onto the pie is the easiest way but alas some of the pastry got stuck to the chopping board and i now have a gaping hole! Cut around the pastry and gather the excess.

With some creativity and panic you can solve the hole problem with the left over pastry. I tried some "crazy paving pastry", my food, as you will learn, is never well presented but tastes great (big head)so unless your date is John Michelle Juniors daughter it doesn't matter how looks as long as it actually looks like a pie.

Make some holes in the top and put in an oven you have preheated to about 200 degrees for around half an hour. In this time you can make mash potatoes and boil some nice green beans to go with it...or chips. Chips are great.

And there you have it. One pie! Enjoy!

Unrequited lust

I find myself in a predicament and lamenting the fact i have a women's brain. I am hopelessly in lust with the most inappropriate person and the feeling is not mutual. I wonder why my body and brain allows themselves to quietly obsess about a person who is clearly not interested. Surely for the sake of self preservation and to secure the means of survival of the human race by breeding i should be attracted to men who actually are attainable but unfortunately i seem to be wired up incorrectly. Time and time a again i get into situations where i take things further then i should and i am left hurt and a bit used or i become jealous to the point of distraction because i fancy a bloke who, to be quite honest would make a better friend then potential husband (yes i said husband!). It seems i am not happy unless i am driving myself stir crazy picking faults with myself to explain why someone just isn't attracted to me. Why do i and almost every other female out there do this?

Of course the sensible, adult part of my brain is screaming and wailing "he's just not that into you and that's ok, it doesn't make him a bastard!!" but the crippling self doubt and body hang ups from my teen years overwhelm it. I actually happen to quite like myself as a whole. I like the way i'm put together (even if there is a tad too much of it at the moment), i like my sense of humour, i am kind and thoughtful, i'm a giver not a taker but when it comes to the opposite sex all that goes out of the window and start to pick faults with myself to justify why some men don't want to be with me. How did this become normal? More importantly how do you stop yourself from doing this? Is there away to just take a deep breath, shake off the doubt and realise that actually he can rub whoever's leg he wants, he can talk to who he pleases and my goodness he can take a phone number if he wants to. I shouldn't feel personally slighted because someone i like may like someone else, last time i checked i wasn't 15 and i didn't have the monopoly of every bloke i have passing attraction to. I am hardly short of confidence, i just seem to be short of common sense.

Perhaps i need to start listening to my head rather then my libido.

Media rant

I had the misfortune of having waking up to Lady Gaga's groin gyrating and thrusting on my TV screen on Sunday morning and it did not set me up in the best of moods. Now call me a conservative or a prude but how is this ok at 10am on a Sunday? It's soft core porn surely? It seems that music videos can get away with almost anything these days with Gaga and Madonna and Christina in those chaps legs akimbo and gusset poised to consume it's prey, the famous "Call on me" Video, all with women in crazy high-legged leotards bring camel toes into fashion. Did i miss that copy of heat where fanny flaps were this seasons next accessory?

I don't have many a good word to say about female artists such as Avril Levigne (how do you spell it?) or Hayley whats her face from Paramore. However i would much rather my hypothetical children were watching girls wearing t-shirts and jeans singing about boys being stupid and wearing too much eyeliner rather then watching women striding around almost naked, singing about stealing other peoples boyfriends because they are "wrong" (i hear it's because they perform oral on a first date but perhaps the Pussy Cat Dolls have some self respect) and riding disco sticks. I cannot believe for one minute that this is good for a 10 year old girl to be watching? Are mothers serious when they let this sort of thing into their kids lives? I know it isn't all that easy what with radio and sky tv being so easily accessible but come on! MTV is gratuitous soft porn for teenagers these days i swear.

Like i said call me a prude if you wish but i for one am glad i bought myself up on rock music rather then the pop music that passes for family entertainment these days.

Say it with me "LESS MUFF MORE MUSIC!"

Is that man touching her muff?

We have a theory that Madonnas lady garden actually has teeth like Alien...yeah, think about it.

To war, to victory!

Saw this and thought it was rather funny.

There's the guy Jeff I work with, real smart guy. Has a past, though. One of the things he told me about from his college was too strange not to share. He told me this story after I told him were my relatives lived.

He and his friends declared war on Sweden.

No, really. It started when one of his friends wanted to start a Scrabble group, and I forgot what the name was, but the initials were SAAB. So he tried to register saab.com, only to find it was taken! By a Swedish car manufacturer, even! Well, he got mad, and while slightly drunk, decalred war on Sweden. He wrote this letter, formally declaring war on Sweden, and sent it to the Swedish Embassy, The King of Sweden, and SAAB headquarters in Sweden. The letter outlined their rage at the name SAAB being stolen, and said that they would get their Navy, which consisted of three college guys and a canoe, row to Sweden (which they anticipated would take a few months), and attack in one of Stockholm's harbors after they had a bite to eat.

A few months later, they got a box from Sweden. It was from the SAAB headquaters, and it had a letter of its own. SAAB said that they were sorry the name had been taken, and hoped the package arrived before their Navy departed. The explained that SAAB didn't just make cars, but engines for military aircraft, and hoped that their contribution of an air force to their Navy war on Sweden would be taken as a formal apology.

The package contained about 100 of those "ready-to-assemble" balsa wood kits of rubber-band driven airplanes. With the SAAB logo, of course.

That is really cool! I am glad to say the people at SAAB have a good sense of humor.

You want to book it where?

I seem to be posting a lot of pictures up of other peoples work instead of writing about what's happening to me. Mostly this is because i am devoid of any talent when it comes to being funny and drawing at the same time.

So me, well the split has affected me more then i gave myself credit for. I did really like him and it makes it worse that this isn't his fault, he just has stupid brain chemicals and there is nothing any of us can do. I feel it is my pride that has taken the brunt of the battering, he has all the cards and he has them in a locked box strapped to his chest. He text me an apology on the Tuesday but refused to reply after i sent him a message back.

I don't know if opening up the wound would do either of us any good but he has managed to make himself feel better by removing the factor causing him too much stress (me) and has transferred that negative energy to me. I have managed to turn it all in on myself and if i am not not careful i start to believe that this is all my fault or he met someone else. Of course none of this true (hopefully) but it doesn't stop it being real in my stupid head.

Anyway i will be fine in a week and it is nothing that a few pizzas and friends can't solve. It was nice whilst it lasted and it was nice for it to have been with someone who had nothing to do with any of the shit of the past 3 years.

To change the subject work is getting on ok but the ward night out i organised was a complete disaster. People were rude, drunk and surly. The food wasn't up to scratch, i wasn't given what i was promised and to round it off we ended up in a terrible club which set my nasty head cold back off again. I was in bed by 12am and felt awful for two days afterwards. You can understand how i feel that i have to organise the sodding xmas party too. Most have them have claimed that at a hotel venue i have booked the food is too posh, the venue too far away and the price of £35 (3 course meal, DJ and disco and gorgeous views!!) is far too expensive...THEY ALL EARN MORE THEN ME!!. Jesus if it isn't chicken in a basket then they don't want to know. In fact they all want to go to a local buffet restaurant...for a christmas meal. It's cheap, cheerful and nearby and thats what they want. Only 6 people included me have paid deposits for the hotel and quite frankly i have had enough. I tried to find another place to eat but Tapas is too foreign, Italian doesn't have a turkey dinner option (where the hell is the turkey dinner option for a buffet restaurant that only serves Indian, Chinese, Mexican and Italian food??) and i flat out refused to do it in a Harvester.

My manager has spoken, we are going to go to the hotel anyway. If you don't want to come then you can go to the buffet place and you can organise it yourself. 3 weeks i;ve been trying to organise this thing so if you miss out then tough. Grrr.

People are hell sometimes.

Things to make me feel better

Here are some pictures that i have found and like that help me keep things in perspective. If there is one thing i am learning every day is don't take yourself too seriously ;)

Actually

He is a fucking bastard.

Back to square one

I was rather unceremoniously dumped today via text. I had no idea that 31 year old men did this but there we go. I would rather not go too far into why he has finished with me as he is entitled to his privacy but it was rather out of the blue.

I'm a little upset as you can imagine, we were only together 2.5 months max but we were talking about holidays, weekends away, christmas, our birthdays and i feel a little like a rug has been whipped from underneath me and i am left a little bewildered how i have ended up single yet again.

I am trying to be good and not turn this into a reflection onto me because it isn't my fault he has decided to end it, it's due to his problems, but one has to wonder about my choices of men. I am still choosing the wrong men even though i am making a concerted effort not to! Maybe this is some physiological thing and my sub-concious is making me attracted to men who are either socially inept, have mental health problems that they are not willing to treat or are just bastards.

Yes i am only 22, there are plenty more fish and i will meet him eventually but i am a little bored of kissing frogs.

Never mind i still have my crochet, my goldfish and a metric fuck ton of baking to do before i jack it all in and become a recluse or a nun.

At least i can stop shaving my legs again, every cloud eh?

Pride and prejudice

I have found my new favourite web comic, Hark a Vagrant. Very funny take on some history, some American but plenty in there for the rest of us! Here is my favourite so far (partially because i am obsessed with this book right now).

Crabby old lady

On the bus (which was pointless as it was late and i was trying to get home early) and tired. Two boys get on, about 12 and 13 years old. They start play fighting, it gets louder and louder and more and more violent till i turn round and in my best instructor voice yell "Guys, will you just sit down?!"

Silence on the bus. Boys go red. I feel bad. Boys try to move seats but they're aren't any. Finally i apologise and explain that "working 8 hours a day in hospital is tiring and i don't want to sit next to you too acting like dicks"

"what do you do?" they ask.

"i put make up on dead people"

They move and stand at the front.

True story!

Ear medicine

Some of you may or may not know that my ears are a bit fucked. Not as bad as Mr Hippy as he has to wear the 'aids (arf arf) but very prone to disease, popping, weeping, infection and occasionally, without warning, my ear drums blow up. Lovely. I have been very tired and head achy recently and managed to work out i have yet another ear infection which has been waking me up throughout the night feeling like someone is drilling into my ear with barbed wire and hypodermic needles.

Luckily i joined my local GP a few weeks ago (only took me 3 years of living in Bristol) and toddled off after work today after a surprise appointment cropped up. Dr confirmed what i had thought ("oh dear it all looks a bit angry in there" "yes, i can tell this because when you jam your machine in my ear i feel like vomiting").

I get my prescription, i am happy, i get outside, i realise i can't get my prescription till next Friday. Balls.

Christmas

Yes i know it's 3.5 months away but last year was a bit fail and so i am trying to organise this year early. I am booked in to visit my parents two weeks before the day so that means i can have birthday/xmas presents lavished on me. I am treating myself to a new tattoo (placement to be decided)on the same weekend which is rather exciting too.

The one day that is a bit of a bugger is xmas day it's self. Maz maybe a round but equally she may not. I would LOVE to go away to Europe somewhere to celebrate, somewhere like Bruge or Berlin but not sure i can afford it or find anyone to go with and so i think it will end up being me, myself and i with a bottle of wine and the TV. I am thinking about volunteering somewhere such as the soup kitchen or the local RSPCA centre for a few hours for that nice warm feeling inside.

Next year i will hopefully be driving in my own car so going home won't even be an issue but currently i hate public transport in the holidays, especially Christmas time, cramped, over priced and everyone is in a foul mood!

If anyone has any ideas let me know!

Oh dear

I seem to have managed to follow my own blog through the accidental click of a button. Bugger. What will this mean? Will the internet now turn in on its self imploding into a million pieces so we can go back to having normal, uneventful lives? No face book, no Myspace, no blogs, NO PORN!!!!

Hey i may have just saved our youth here.

Still 17 followers (not including me) is pretty rad. Thanks to each and everyone of you for subscribing to my irrational and often poorly written stream of conciousness.

She came, she saw, she made dip

So Maz's birthday was over the weekend but due to a cruel twist of fate everyone was going to the ginger fuzz balls for some sort of geek orgy thing and the BBQ was cancelled...but not if i could help it! I can't claim all the credit of course but after suggestions of pub were offered up i did the classic "oh i'l cook!". Why do i always say that?

The pub was really lovely, myself, Ben, Maz, Rich, Sam, George, Jess and baby Alex all spent a lazy Sunday afternoon drinking and playing with kids toys in the garden (pictures to follow).

After many a laugh we trooped all of ten feet back to Team Kellaways pad for Mexican madness. I made Fajitas (veggie and meaty), rice and beans, homemade salsa and guacamole, spicy potatoes, sour cream and for pudding fruit and meringue with cream. Phew. Next time someone else can cook. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and it was nice making sure Maz had a good birthday. Birthdays are hella important to me (no one seems to get this but its one of the many things that makes me special).

Work is going really well but i am getting a little flustered and stressed. I've forgotten what it's like to have to chase people and rely on others to ensure i can do my job. It sucks balls. I've also learnt to avoid certain members of staff (i literally run and hide from one woman as one wrong word and she can shit on me from a great height. I don't think i need that) which staff members are good at remembering what you've asked or told them. Also always make sure you have ordered everything you need from medical records before going there. Its a 20 minute journey just to get there if you get a lift. This is because people in lifts are retards. I hate them. The doors will be closing and someone will throw themselves in and then realise its going the wrong way then battle to get out again. You stand there like battery hens sweating like pigs complaining about the heat/crushing/lack of lifts... Idiots.
